Lorient Apartments & Villas (Brittany)
Lorient is a port on the Brittany coast roughly midway between Quimper to the north west and Vannes to the south east. The population is between 60 and 70 thousand people and it is both a port and a naval station. The history is rich with shipbuilding and more latterly the town has been a centre to textiles, furniture production and navigation equipment. In the area surrounding Lorient you can stay in some lovely Brittany holiday villas with pools.
The town was established int he seventeenth centruy as a a port for the French East India company and as a naval base for Napoleon. During the second world war it was the Germans' major submarine base on the Atlantic. The town was protected by the Saint-Louis Citadel at the entrance to the bay.
Lorient is a modern, pleasant and clean coastal town and a great place for watching life happening around you. Sipping a coffee in a cafe or walking along the promenade, eating the local cuisine in a restaurant near the sea, watching the moored yachts, or just cacthing a view of the local fishing scene; all this in a day ! The local seafood is particularly good as this is the second largest fishing port in France. The local beaches and the forest and countryside are nearby. During August the town of Lorient lives up to its Celtic heritage by hosting the renowned Festival Interceltique this is a mix of Celts from Brittany, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Spain and Cornwall. It’s an incredible atmosphere with very hospitable people. Certainly the town is worth a visit even if you are renting a Brittany villa nearby.
