Pont l'Abbe Apartments & Villas (Brittany)
Pont l'Abbe is situated in a lovely part of the west Brittany coast about 25 km south west of the town of Quimper. This small town has just under nine thousand inhabitants and it is the capital of Pays Bigouden, a traditional district located in southern western Brittany. It is at the estuary of the river Pot l'Abbe. This is a great location to take your holiday in a Brittany villa or Brittany apartment so that you can enjoy the coastline with its beaches, fresh Atlantic sea air and many historic towns.
There are many prehistorical megalithic monuments in the area: known as menhirs (erected stones) and the dolmens (lying stones). After the conquest of Brittany, the Romans built a fortified camp on the top of the hill dominating the modern town.
The name Pont l'Abbe (Abbot's Bridge) comes from the bridge built between the port and the pond by the monks of the abbey of Loctudy, located on the mouth of the river.
Pont-l'Abbé's castle dates from the 14th to the 18th centuries. It now serves as the town hall and houses the Bigouden Museum, with its fine collection of costumes and Bigouden head-dresses,
