Quimper is located in the heart of Brittany in north west France. The city is flanked by the Odet and Steir rivers. The name Quimper derives from kempir, a breton word for the 'confluence of two rivers'. The city is most famous for its ceramics which have been produced since the seventeenth century. Historically the Duke of Cornwall was resident here making Quimper the ancient capital of Cornouaille. As both the cultural and historical hub of Brittany, Quimper demostrates diverse architecture ranging from its Gothic cathedral to the impressive granite bishop's palace as well as private 16th century mansions. The old town lies to the west of the cathedral and is charming with its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and friendly atmosphere.
