The region of Poitou-Charentes is bordered by Pays-de-La-Loire on the north, Aquitaine in the south and both the Centre and Limousin in the east. The west of course is the Atlantic coast and the reason why many people come here for holidays in France. The region has a lovely sandy coastline and pine forests and inland is the Charente river and the Marais Poitevin marshes with their poplar groves. This is reputedly the most sunny region of the Atlantic wets coast and includes the areas of Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. Visitors like the islands of of Ré, Oléron and Aix, as well as the seaside resorts of the Côte de Beauté, such as Royan and La Rochelle. Both ports of La Rochelle and Rochefort are worth a visit as is the amphitheatre at Saintes and the Romanesque churches in many towns including Poitiers.

The most well known town, due to the famous drink, is Cognac. Rochefort is often overlooked compared to its neighbour La Rochelle but should still be visited. La Rochelle is a very friendly town for tourists and even places free bicycles at the disposal of tourists. Saintes is an ancient town on one of the old pilgrimage routes to Spain and is a good place for visiting the Romanesque churches.
