The area behind the port and Place Massena is the location of the open market an dthe best place for restaurants and cafes. The beach is pebbly and is bounded by a large dual carriageway. Nevertheless the city retains an Italianate charm which has attracted visitors from all over the world for a long time. This contrasts the reputation that the city has for organized crime which is perhaps unfounded as the city is only marginally worse than Paris and that has not deterred visitors at all.
There are a lot of cultural things to enjoy about Nice such as the summer jazz festival, the range of art galleries, museums, and many other festivals throughout the year including the carnival in May. The old town square is towered over by the lovely Baroque Chapelle de la Misericorde with its blue and gold interior. There are also the Opera de Nice, Galerie de la Marine and galleria des Ponchettes to visit as well as other cathedrals, palais and museums.
